PinOaks Park was never created simply to retrain or rehome Thoroughbreds.

It was created because there was a gap.

After working in New Zealand’s Thoroughbred industry for many years, I had the privilege of seeing just how remarkable these horses are. Originally from Scotland, I immigrated to New Zealand with a lifelong horse background and built my career working within leading Thoroughbred racing stables, breeding farms and stud operations. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the breed. Thoroughbreds are incredibly willing, intelligent and athletic horses, and in my experience, they thrive when they’re given purpose and understood for who they are.

As I became more involved in retraining and rehoming retired racehorses, I started to notice a pattern.

Some horses found incredible homes and flourished in their second careers. Others weren’t so fortunate.

Too often, Thoroughbreds were simply being passed on to whoever was available at the time. Many owners genuinely wanted to do the right thing, but there wasn’t a clear, structured pathway to help them make the best decision for their horse. As a result, horses were sometimes mismatched with riders, sold before they were truly ready, or found themselves moving from home to home as people struggled with challenges they hadn’t anticipated.

Over time, I found myself receiving more and more phone calls from owners asking for help.

Some needed advice. Some had realised the horse they had purchased wasn’t the right match. Others were facing changes in their own circumstances and wanted to do the right thing by their horse. Increasingly, I wasn’t just rehoming Thoroughbreds I was helping people navigate difficult decisions and trying to find the best outcome for each individual horse.

I realised I was often picking up the pieces after things had already gone wrong.

That was the turning point.

Rather than continuing to react to problems, I wanted to create a system that helped prevent them in the first place.

That’s why PinOaks has evolved into New Zealand’s Thoroughbred Transition Centre.

Today, every horse begins with a professional Transition Assessment. Instead of assuming every horse should follow the same path, we assess the individual horse, its current situation and its future potential before recommending the most appropriate pathway.

For some horses, that pathway may be immediate rehoming.

Others may benefit from rehabilitation, further education, companion placement or additional veterinary investigation. In some cases, the kindest and most responsible recommendation may be a humane end-of-life decision.

Our role is not to force every horse into the same outcome.

Our role is to recommend the right outcome.

Every recommendation is guided by welfare, transparency and the long-term future of the horse.

Because when we get the transition right, everybody benefits the horse, the owner, the racing industry and the next person lucky enough to call that Thoroughbred their own.
